When it came time for Polar Bear Coolers to sponsor a race car, we knew that we had to go over the top. Sure, we could have sponsored a NASCAR or a Formula 500 Car, but that is what everybody does! Instead, we took to the desert for answers. It was there, on the scorching hot Baja desert dunes that we came across off-road enthusiast (and all-around crazy man) Jay Callaway. Handsome Jay is the lead driver for Redlyner Racing, and is just as concerned about his hair product as he is about his shock tuning. Redlyner Racing typically competes in the ULTRA4 Racing events, most notably the notorious King Of Hammers race in Southern California.
King of The Hammers takes place each year in February, on public lands in Johnson Valley, CA. The race has evolved from 12 teams racing for bragging rights and a case of beer, to more than 300 teams competing before more than 35,000 fans in person and nearly 500,000 watching online. Due to the incredible success of King of the Hammers, Hammerking has created an ULTRA4 Racing Series with seven races held throughout the country.
Each of these races is a qualifier for the King of The Hammers race each year. In addition to these races, Hammerking has established a racing class known as the ULTRA4 class. The defining characteristic of this class is that all cars must be capable of 4-wheel drive. Beyond that, the class is unlimited. These cars come in all shapes and sizes and are capable of speeds over 100+ MPH and still contain gear ratios as low as 100 to 1 for technical rock crawling.
When we found Jay in the desert, he told us that he had two needs:
1) A product that could be attached to his off-road monstrosity to keep his water and nutrition cold in the 105+ degrees temperatures in which he competes,
2) A secondary product that could be attached to his car to be used as a tool bag. This tool bag would need to be extremely well-insulated, so that the tools do not heat up, making them too hot to work with.
When we heard this, we knew that Jay was talking to the right people. We immediately outfitted Jay and his buggy with some Polar Bear H2O Coolers. As the pioneering company behind the high-performance soft cooler movement, we knew that our product would hold up against any environment, including flying through the desert at 150mph in 105 Degree heat.
Jay was naturally skeptical at first, but after a few trial runs in the desert, he was sold. Once he realized that his drinks, nutrition and tools would be able to stay cool for not one, not two but for THREE days in the unforgiving Baja heat, Jay became a Polar Bear Coolers supporter for life. The Handsome Man is currently training for his second attempt to claim the title at King of Hammers, and is also competing in other off-road races across the country, with his Polar Bear Coolers in tow. Jay utilizes the eight Stainless-Steel tie downs on the H2O Cooler to secure the cooler to his car. Remember – if you can ride it, rock it, wheel it, deal it or steal it, then the Polar Bear Cooler can be attached to your vehicle with ease. Thanks to the waterproof, tear-resistant TPU shell on the Polar Bear H2O Coolers, Jay can simply hose-down his cooler after each desert run. The freshly-washed H2O Cooler then matches Jay’s high-end fashion sense, and makes the perfect beverage cooler for an after-race press conference.
Needless to say, when Jay showed up at King of Hammers for the first time in 2016 with his Polar Bear Cooler, the trend caught on quickly. Finding Polar Bear Coolers in “Hammertown” is now commonplace, and it is not unusual to spot a few Backpack Coolers being worn by spectators throughout the crowd.
