Description

The Medium Med Cooler is designed to work with ice packs or regular ice. The initial cold charge from the ice packs provided, will maintain an average temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit for around 12 hours. After that you will need to add ice for continued travel, or re-freeze your Polar Bear ice packs.

The containment area of the Medium Med Cooler is 6.5”x 9.2" x 3.7”. Your medication will need to fit inside of these dimensions in order for this product to work properly.

Greetings: I am writing to express my sincere appreciation to Polar Bear Coolers for saving my expensive arthritis medication (Humira) when Hurricane Irene hit and I lost electrical power in my townhome for over 16 hours... I purchased a Polar Bear Cooler medium medical cooler in May 2010 after I started taking the biologic medicine Humira for my arthritis. Humira has to be continually refrigerated between 36 to 46 degrees F and it's a very expensive arthritis medication (one that has been working for me after numerous other anti-rheumatic meds failed over the past year). I wanted the medical cooler to transport the medication from the pharmacy to home and in case of (what I thought would be short) power outages and brief road trips. When I purchased the medical cooler I sure did not envision losing power for a prolonged time period as a result of a hurricane a few months later... On Saturday August 26th Hurricane Irene made landfall on the Outer Banks and shortly thereafter Irene made its way up the coast impacting the Northern Virginia area where I reside. The Tropical Storm force winds and heavy rain were enough to cause numerous trees in my neighborhood to topple over and down power lines. We lost power on Saturday evening for a few hours (during which time I used my medical cooler) and then again in the middle of the night - around 1 AM Saturday morning. Fortunately I woke up about an hour after we had lost power; probably because I heard the heavy winds and rain outside. I quickly retrieved my Humira from my powerless refrigerator and placed it into my medical cooler surrounded by the ice gel packs that I also purchased from Polar Bear Coolers. The second power outage that happened in the middle of the night on Saturday lasted much longer than I anticipated and Dominion Power was not able to provide us a firm estimate of restoration date/time due to the immense outage area and massive restoration work needed. By late Sunday afternoon August 27th, my Humira had been in the medical cooler for over 12 hours when I was able to find a neighbor about a mile from me who had a generator (NOT a common commodity in the Northern Virginia area, though they may be more prevalent post-Irene these days). Without opening the Polar Bear Cooler the entire time, I was able to drive to my neighbor's house around the downed trees and power lines. We took the Humira out of the insulated waterproof inner box in the medical cooler and found the Humira to be at about 42 F, which was well within the safe range, after 14 hours in the medical cooler. We put it in my neighbor's refrigerator powered by her generator and she put the gel ice packs in her freezer to refreeze so that I could retrieve them later after my power was finally restored. The Polar Bear medical cooler truly saved my box of Humira, which was worth close to $2K in value, besides the hassle I would have had to go through to refill it before I needed to take it on Thursday September 1st. I couldn't be happier with the way my Polar Bear Cooler performed; it exceeded my expectations. Since then I have purchased 2 additional ice gel packs from Polar Bear Coolers so that I now have 4 total which should last me a good 24 hours (2 ice packs each 12 hours) in preparation for the next power outage event (that I certainly hope never happens, but better to be over-prepared next time). Because I live in a townhome condo, I have no yard or place/room for a generator that would be safe. Hence, the more vital it is that I have the Polar Bear Cooler to keep my medications cold and buy me enough time to get my medications to a place where there is a functional refrigerator in the event of an extended power outage. I highly recommend Polar Bear Coolers for anyone who has medications that require refrigeration, whether they are expensive biologic medications like mine or not...it's one of the best investments I have ever made...and it can also be used to keep non-meds chilled too of course...thanks again Polar Bear Coolers!!! I'm hoping I don't have to do another extended "test" of my Polar Bear Cooler this hurricane season of this winter, but I'm ready if it happens...and will let you know how it goes...keep cool... I just got back from my trip that cause me to get the cooler, and I wanted to tell you that it worked out great. My flight home included a layover and a "how to get to the car" escapade that made the trip home 15 hours, easy. When I unpacked to cooler, the meds were still chilled. I used blue ice packs for the trip down, with different ice packs (similar to the ones included in that they were the squares, but much easier to work with) for the trip home and that worked fine. Since I was in Central America, I was very concerned that the ungodly heat would melt the ice packs, but the cooler itself kept things cold. Thanks for your advice with the cooler - unlike my trip last year, I did NOT have my medication spoil in transport!
